After their stepfather beats their mother to death, one of the brothers kills him with an ax as he lays in a drunken stupor and then goes out to chop down a Christmas tree. The two boys refuse to accept their mother is dead and so have propped the corpse up in a chair which they carry downstairs to display in front of their tree. The corpse of the dead woman's husband, who was killed in a mine cave-in, shambles in through the door and takes his wife by the hand. The dead woman rises and the two of them head back towards the cave. The brothers are glad their parents are together once more.
